Denver Falls to Oral Roberts in Regular Season Finale

The Pioneers will have a bye this weekend before next week’s Summit League Tournament in Sioux Falls

TULSA – The University of Denver men's basketball program ended the regular season at 15-16, and 8-8 in Summit League play after a 102-80 loss at Oral Roberts on Thursday night in the Mabee Center.

LEADERS:
Sophomore Carson Johnson led the Pioneers with 22 points and five assists. Ty Harper led the Golden Eagles with 47 points, going 21-of-21 from the free-throw line.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half:
Denver got on the board first, but a 10-2 ORU run gave the Golden Eagles a 13-7 lead with just over 16 minutes to play, a lead they took with them into the media timeout. The Pioneers cold start to the game continued as Denver went on another three-minute stretch without a point, going 1-for-10 in its last 10 before the under-12. ORU maintained a 15-9 lead heading into the second break of the evening.

Oral Roberts continued to find success on the offensive end, hitting four-straight shots out of the timeout that included three from beyond the arc to stretch its lead to 26-13 with 10:09 to play before halftime. Carson Johnson hit Denver's first triple in its last 10 attempts to trim the deficit to 29-18 at the under-8.

The Golden Eagles continued to shoot the lights out in the first half, connecting on its fifth triple in eight attempts to get their lead out to 16 with 6:53 to go.

ORU built on its lead down the stretch and took an 18-point lead into the locker room. Ty Harper had 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting and 10-of-10 from the line in the first half.

Second Half:
The Golden Eagles hit their first two triples out of the locker room to extend the home team's lead out to 24 right out of the gate. Despite Johnson hitting his first two threes out of the halftime break, ORU scored 10 points on its first four possessions on its way to a 67-42 lead at the under-16.

A Jeremiah Burke layin, an old-fashioned three-point play and a Johnson runner put Denver on a 7-1 run to trim the deficit back to 19. ORU maintained that 19-point advantage into the second media timeout.

Oral Roberts continued to get to the line, where it shot 90% on Thursday night, going 35-for-39 from the line in the contest en-route to the 22-point win.
