OMAHA, Neb. -- The University of Denver women's basketball team cruised past Omaha to earn a 71-50 win to close out the regular season.
Both
Coryn Watts and
Jocelyn Medina recorded 20-point performances with 23 and 21 points respectively. Medina tacked on six rebounds while
Brooke Murrell,
Tori Baker and
Karolina Padilla each added five.
Anna Rosenberger added a career-best three blocks.
Denver set the tone early, racing out to an 11-5 lead in the opening quarter while holding Omaha scoreless for more than two minutes. The Pioneers capped the frame on a 5-0 run to take a 16-9 advantage into the second.
Medina opened the second quarter with a three-pointer to stretch the lead to 19-9, but Omaha responded with a 5-0 run as Denver went scoreless for more than two minutes. Medina ended the drought with a steal and score to make it 21-16, sparking a brief surge that pushed the lead to 23-17. Both teams endured extended scoring droughts late in the half before trading free throws to close the period, giving Denver a 28-21 halftime cushion.
The Pioneers seized control in the third. A 5-0 run out of the break extended the margin to 33-24, and Denver continued to find its rhythm offensively while limiting the Mavericks' opportunities. Omaha mounted a brief push, but Denver answered to maintain a double-digit edge and carried a 49-38 lead into the final quarter.
Omaha opened the fourth with a three-pointer and Denver committed a pair of quick fouls, but the Pioneers quickly regained command. Back-to-back three-pointers from Padilla and Watts ignited a decisive surge that stretched the lead to 64-44. Denver's defense remained suffocating down the stretch, sealing the 21-point victory.
