DENVER – The [13/13] University of Denver men's lacrosse program dropped its conference opener to [14/14] Georgetown on Saturday afternoon by a count of 17-5 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
LEADERS:
Chris Merageas and
Rory Graham had Denver's two multi point games.
Russell Overly had three caused turnovers and two ground balls to lead the Denver defense.
Kevin Miller led Georgetown with five goals and goalie Anderson Moore had 10 saves against just four goals allowed.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter:
Lucas Klokiw opened the scoring with 9:43 to go, finishing a feed from
Rory Graham to get the Pioneers on the board. Georgetown answered with back-to-back goals from Liam Connor and Jack Schubert to put the visitors ahead.
Chase Bruno switched to his off left hand and found the back of the net with one on the timer to even things at 2-2 with 2:26 to go. The Hoyas answered a Denver goal with two more of their own again to make it 4-2 with 32 seconds left. Georgetown took that two goal lead into the quarter break.
Second Quarter:
Georgetown got three of the first four goals of the second frame to push its lead out to four with under 10 minutes to play in the first half. Graham got Denver's lone goal in the early stage of the second off the stick from Graham late in the shot clock.
Out of a Denver timeout,
Chris Merageas struck for Denver, but Rory Connor had the answer for the Hoyas to make it 8-4 with 7:49 to go.
Georgetown continued to play add on, getting 11 first half goals to stretch the lead to seven with under four minutes to play. The Hoyas took that 11-4 lead into the break.
Third Quarter:
Georgetown scored the first three of the second half to stretch its lead to 10 at the third quarter media timeout. The Hoyas man-down unit stopped Denver's best offensive chance on a two-minute man-up opportunity, and Georgetown took a 14-4 lead into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
The Hoyas opened the fourth quarter scoring with Kevin Miller's fourth goal of the day, and added another on Natty Mason's second of the afternoon. Miller's fifth of the day made it 17-4 with 9:12 to play.
Watt Muir scored Denver's lone goal of the second half to reach the final score at 17-5.
UP NEXT: Denver will play its first road conference game next Saturday when the Pioneers make the trip to Villanova. Opening faceoff is set for 12 p.m. ET/10 a.m. MT, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
