STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The No. 19 University of Denver women's lacrosse team battled back and forth but ultimately fell to the No.13 Stony Brook Seawolves, 12-11, on Friday afternoon in New York.
Both defenses controlled the early portion of the game, with
Lexi Gwaku making a save on Stony Brook's opening shot attempt. The teams remained scoreless for more than nine minutes before the Seawolves broke through at the 5:31 mark of the first quarter for a 1–0 lead.
Stony Brook doubled its advantage to 2–0 with 3:36 remaining in the opening period, but Denver responded late.
Eva Thomsen-Marr scored off an assist from
Ryan Dineen with 1:37 left, and
Caroline Keil converted a free-position attempt with 47 seconds remaining to tie the game 2–2 at the end of the first quarter.
The teams traded goals throughout the second quarter. Stony Brook struck first to regain the lead, but Keil answered again at 10:30 with an assist from
Kyra Obert to even the score at 3–3. Moments later,
Kendra Harris scored her first career goal on a free-position shot at 10:03, giving Denver its first lead of the game at 4–3.
Stony Brook tied the game at 4–4 before
Karleigh Mutch finished a feed from
Caroline Bowers to restore Denver's advantage at 5–4. The Seawolves responded again with two late goals, including one with eight seconds remaining in the half, to take a 6–5 lead into the break.
Denver quickly pulled even early in the third quarter when
Olivia Ripple scored off another assist from Dineen at 14:04. Ripple struck again less than two minutes later, this time off a pass from Mutch, to give the Pioneers a 7–6 lead. After Stony Brook answered, Keil completed her hat trick with 3:01 remaining in the quarter on a feed from Obert, sending Denver into the final period with an 8–7 edge.
Stony Brook regained momentum in the fourth quarter, scoring three straight goals — including a free-position finish at 8:07 — to build a 10–8 advantage. Ripple helped Denver rally with two late goals, and Thomsen-Marr converted a free-position opportunity with under a minute remaining to tie the game 11–11 and force overtime.
In the extra period, Gwaku made a key save to keep the Pioneers alive, but Stony Brook eventually found the game-winner to secure the 12–11 overtime victory.
