DENVER – The University of Denver women's basketball program has signed freshman point guard Safiyah Sugapong to its 2026-27 roster, head coach Erik Johnson announced on Thursday.
 
In her high school career, the 1,000 point scorer was named All-CIF First Team in both her junior and senior seasons. Sugapong was also a McDonald's All-American Nominee and the Coastal League Player of the Year in 2025-26. The new DU point guard led her conference in assists per game last season and was named the athlete of the year at her high school.
 
Sugapong is Johnson's second signing of the offseason, joining point guard Emma Hart (FULL RELEASE).

Chose Denver because of the coaching staff, the community feel around the campus and the opportunity to compete against top competition in the WCC and give her family and friends in California the ability to come to several of her games…Excited about the opportunity to play college basketball at a high level while pursuing a strong education…Also enjoys art, ceramics, painting, going to the beach, listening to music and getting boba...Intends to major in business…One of five children in her family.
