Denver Names Agustín Moreno Next Head Women’s Tennis Coach

Moreno comes to the Mile High City with over 20 seasons of Division I coaching experience
DENVER – The University of Denver athletic department has named former Loyola Marymount and South Florida head coach Agustín Moreno its next head women's tennis coach, Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Ritchie Center Operations Josh Berlo announced on Tuesday. Moreno's introductory press conference will be held in the Haefner Media Suite at 2:30 p.m. MT on Tuesday, August 18.
"We're very excited to welcome Agustín to the University of Denver," Berlo said. "Coach Moreno has built his accomplished career on a winning culture that prioritizes player development and discipline, values that match those of our athletic department. A top player in his own right, Agustín has demonstrated an ability to coach at a high level across the country as well as at the international level. We're confident that Agustín is the right fit for our women's tennis student-athletes as the University transitions to the West Coast Conference this season."
Moreno has 20 seasons of experience as a Division I women's tennis head coach, entering Denver's first season in the West Coast Conference in 2027 with a 247-158 overall record. The new Denver head coach most recently spent 11 seasons at fellow West Coast Conference-member LMU, going 120-83, including 51-28 in league play. Prior to LMU, Moreno spent nine seasons at South Florida where he went 127-75 in dual matches and won both BIG EAST (2007) and American Athletic Conference (2013) championships.

"I'd like to thank Chancellor Jeremy Haefner, Athletic Director Josh Berlo and the rest of the search committee for their trust in me to lead the Denver women's tennis program forward. New challenges create new opportunities, but I'm also excited about the chance to continue to compete in the West Coast Conference. I'm grateful for the incredible journey at Loyola Marymount and wish them all the best."
Moreno has also coached at the international level, serving as captain of the Mexico Billie Jean King Cup Team (formally Fed Cup) since 2017 and as head coach of Mexico's Women's Tennis Olympic Team in 2021 (delayed from 2020 due to pandemic). Prior to taking over the cup team, Moreno coached Mexican national teams at various levels and served as an assistant with the Mexican Davis Cup Team.
In 2022, Moreno was named the West Coast Conference Coach of the Year after leading LMU to an 18-4 season and an 8-1 mark in WCC play, good for second in the conference. The Lions were ranked as high as 17th in the country that season, the highest national ranking in the program's history. Moreno's WCC Coach of the Year season in 2022 included a win over No. 4 UCLA, the program's first victory over a top-five program. The following year, the Lions recorded three more top-50 victories, part of a 15-7 campaign (7-2 WCC).
Moreno coached the Lions to a 17-6 record in 2018, including a 10-0 record at home and a 7-2 West Coast Conference mark. The Lions earned a second-place finish in the WCC that season, the program's best finish since 2006. Moreno coached Veronica Miroshnichenko to the round of 16 in the NCAA singles championship, the first All-American season in the program's history.
At South Florida, Moreno led the Bulls to six NCAA Tournament appearances, two conference titles and a 15-match home winning streak in the 2014 campaign. Prior to USF, Moreno was an assistant at Geogia and TCU. An assistant at the time, Moreno worked with future top-10 ranked player in the world John Isner during his collegiate days at UGA.
Prior to his coaching career, Moreno was an elite player on the world stage. His junior career was highlighted by earning the World No. 1 ranking in doubles and being ranked No. 11 in singles in 1984. A year later, Moreno won the 1985 Wimbledon Junior Doubles Championship with partner Jaime Yzaga. In his pro career, Moreno was ranked as high as a top-40 doubles player and top-120 singles player on the ATP tour. The 1988 season saw Moreno and his partner reach the semifinals of the French Open. Internationally, Moreno represented Mexico at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul and was a member of the Mexican Davis Cup from 1985 to 1994. Moreno's collegiate playing career included a season at Pepperdine, where he was ranked as high as fourth in the country in doubles and helped the Waves to the national indoor title and a trip to the outdoor national championship match.
Moreno replaces former Denver women's tennis head coach Paul Wardlaw, who took a position with the United States Tennis Association (USTA). Former Denver assistant Kim Gidley was also named the head coach at Stephen F. Austin University earlier this offseason.
