Dan Ficke will enter his fifth season as men's basketball assistant coach in 2019-20. Ficke came to Denver after spending time at both Loyola University Maryland and Wake Forest University.
Ficke helped with the continued development of Joe Rosga, who finished in the top 10 in numerous categories in the program's record book.
The Colorado native again helped showcase a fast-pace Pioneer squad in 2017-18 that averaged 73.1 points per game and ranked first in the Summit League in assists per game (15.1) and rebounding margin (plus-6.0). Denver also finished second in the Summit League in 3-point percentage at 40 percent, which also ranked 15th in the NCAA.
DU posted a 15-15 record in Ficke's third season with the team that also included an 8-6 record in league play, its best record since joining the league back in 2013.
The Pioneers posted a 10-4 mark at home, it's best at Magness since the 2012-13 year.
In 2016-17, Ficke helped the Pioneers excel in transitioning from a slow-paced team to a up-tempo squad that averaged 75.8 points per game, the most by the team since jumping up to Division I back in 1998.
He also guided the Pioneers squad to eight Summit League wins during the year, the most by the program since joining the league back in 2013.
Ficke helped develop the outside shooting touch for DU in 2016-17 as the team ranked 13th in the NCAA in 3-point percentage (40.2).
During the 2015-16 season, Denver ranked seventh in the NCAA in free throw percentage (77.0), 29th in 3-point field goal percentage (38.3), 32nd in field goal percentage (47.6) and 32nd in scoring defense (65.3).
Ficke joined the Loyola staff after spending three seasons at Wake Forest University. In 2012-2013 Ficke served as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach/Director of Scouting and Recruiting. Prior to that, he was the program's Assistant Director of Operations from 2010-2012.
The 6-6 forward played four seasons at Loyola. Ficke was a part of some of the most successful Division I teams at the university during his time with the Greyhounds from 2005-2009. He was a member of teams that won 64 games, including the 2007-2008 team that won what was then a school Division I record 19 contests. Ficke graduated in 2009 with his bachelors in business administration and earned his M.B.A. in 2010.
The Colorado native grew up around the best in the game of basketball, following his dad, Bill, who was an NBA assistant coach and scout for the Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz and New Jersey Nets where he coached alongside Larry Brown and Doug Moe. Bill also played at Belmont Abbey College for legendary coach Al McGuire.
Ficke earned All-Colorado Second Team and All-America honorable mention honors on the prep level at Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colo.
Ficke and his wife, Jordan reside in Denver.
