Matt Neufeldt

  • Title
    Assistant Coach
Former Pioneer and Maryland Terrapin long stick midfielder Matt Neufeldt will begin his third season as an assistant coach with the program in 2025.

2024:
As a full member of the staff for the first itme in 2024, Neufeldt helped lead the Pios to Championship Weekend for the first time since the 2017 campaign, defeating Michigan and Syracuse en-route to punching its ticket to Philadelphia.

Denver rode its defense to the third-highest winning percentage in the country in 2024, a defense that held opponents to a 9.41 goals against average, good for fourth in the country. In the NCAA Quarterfinals at Towson, the Pios held Syracuse to just eight in their two-goal win, the first time the Orange finished in single digits in 2024. DU was efficient on both sides of the ball in power play situations, scoring on 46.5% of its offensive chances to finish 10th in the country in the category, while leading the nation man-down, holding opponents to just a 15.2% success rate.

2023:
In Denver's 10-5, 2023 campaign, Neufeldt worked with the Pioneers goalies and defense, and ran the substitution box. Denver's defense ranked eighth in the country and first in the BIG EAST in scoring defense, allowing just over 10 goals per game, including 8.75/game in the program's four wins over top-15 programs.

PLAYING  CAREER:
As a student-athlete, Neufeldt played and started in all 15 games he played in his only season with the Pioneers in 2019, picking up 66 ground balls and forcing 33 turnovers, good for the most by a Pioneer in a single season and sixth in the country in caused turnovers per game. In the 2019 BIG EAST Semifinal against Villanova, Neufeldt had five caused turnovers (Denver postseason record) and nine ground balls (fourth-most in DU’s postseason history). Neufeldt earned a spot on the 2019 All-BIG EAST Second Team for his performances in his lone season with the Crimson and Gold.

In four years at Maryland prior to his arrival in the Mile High City, Neufeldt was a two-time Honorable Mention All-American selection, helping the Terrapins to the 2017 National Championship. Neufeldt was also a national runner-up during Denver’s National Championship run in 2015, his first of two postseason meetings against the program he would eventually end his career with.

Matt is the son of Cathy Neufeldt.
