Originally from Southern California, Matthew first started playing Volleyball at the age of 14 for San Clemente High School, and 949 Volleyball Club. After his high school and club career, Matthew went on to play at UC Irvine for one season, but decided to take the Junior College route the next two years at Irvine Valley College. Playing for the legendary, Tom Pestolesi, August earned Orange Empire Conference first team honors, as well as MVP in the 2016-2018 seasons.

After his two years at Junior College, August was ready to get back to Division 1 level and committed to the University of Hawaii, but decided to stay back and focus on heading overseas to play professionally. Prior to going overseas, Matthew was able to play for the USA Men’s National Team and brought home a silver medal from the NORCECA Cup in the summer of 2019. After one year of playing the U.S. professional league, the NVA, and with the USA Men’s national team the opportunity came to sign a contract overseas, in the Czech Republic.

In the fall of 2019, Matthew headed to Brno, Czech Republic to start his professional career. Matthew, in just his first season abroad, led his club, Volejbol Brno to a bronze medal finish in the Czech Extraliga while leading the team in blocks, and hitting percentage. After an astounding first season, in the summer of 2020, Matthew signed his 2nd contract overseas with Black Volley Beskydy, also from the Czech Republic. This season led to Matthew being a Top 3 Middle blocker in the league, while also leading his team in blocks.

After three years playing professionally overseas and here in the U.S., Matthew decided to start his coaching career, which led him here to the University of Denver as the Volunteer Assistant Coach.

August currently resides in Denver looking to move up the coaching chain in the years to come.
