Men's Soccer Falls To San Jose State 2-0

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The University of Denver men's soccer team suffered its first conference loss of the season, 2-0, to San Jose State Sunday afternoon at Spartan Stadium. The loss drops Denver to 6-4 overall, 2-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, and snaps a five-game unbeaten streak. San Jose State remains unbeaten on the season and improves to 12-0-1, 4-0 in the MPSF.

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead just 2:18 into the first half. Frank Sanfilippo tipped in a corner kick by Gareth Williams. The goal was the third of the season for Sanfilippo, while Williams was credited with his second assist of the year.

San Jose State's final goal was scored by Ryan Suarez at the 74:56 mark. On a free kick, Jorge Martinez kicked the ball to Sanfilippo. Sanfilipo then passed to Suarez, who scored from close range.

Denver's offense was stymied by the Spartan defense. Humprheys faced only two Denver shots in the game and did not have to make any saves.

The Pioneers return to action this Friday when they travel to Colorado Springs to take on the Air Force Academy Falcons in a MPSF conference match-up. Kick-off is set for 3 pm.
