DENVER (Oct. 28) - The University of Denver cross country teams participated in the Sun Belt Conference Championships today, hosted by the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. The men's squad finished in 10th place with 228 points, and the women finished ninth with 203 points. Conference newcomer North Texas outlasted Western Kentucky 56-66 to take the men's title and New Orleans also outdistanced the Hilltoppers on the women's side, 31-68.
The top placer for the men's team was junior John Frohs (Mittlelsaida, Germany), who finished 19th in the 8,000 meter race with a time of 26:56. Graduate student Pietro Broggini (Gallarte, Italy) was the next highest finisher for the Pioneers in 35th place with a time of 27:51. Junior Wolf Wallendorf (Schonau, Germany) was the next highest placer for the men's squad in 44th place with a time 28:13. August Teague (30:14, 64th), Jack Gervais (30:45, 66th), Todd Greenwood (33:25, 74th), and Hakon Loe Johansen (35:28, 77th) were Denver's other finishers.
The women's side saw junior Anita Gilbert (Boise, Idaho) take top honors for the Pioneers with a 32nd place finish and a time of 19:46 in the 5,000 meter event. Freshman Corinne Trujillo (Ouray, Colo.) was right behind her at 19:55 and in 35th place. Junior Carla Gilbert (Boise, Idaho) was Denver's next highest finisher in 41st place with a time of 20:26. Sanna Vertanen (20:43, 45th), Irene Elder (20:54, 50th), Julie Raffety (21:51, 63rd), and Erin Ekblad (23:31, 71st) rounded out the scoring for Denver.
The cross country teams will both be back in action Saturday, Nov. 11 when they participate in the Weber State Invitational at Ogden, Utah.
