DENVER- The University of Denver hockey team, after giving up a go-ahead goal with 12:58 left in the third period, got a tying goal from sophomore Greg Barber (Kelowna, B.C.) with just over five minutes remaining and the two teams fought a scoreless overtime as Denver got its first tie of the season, 3-3 with No. 8 Providence College. The tie moves Denver's overall record to 4-7-1 on the season. Providence now stands at 7-2-3.

Providence got on the scoreboard first at the 8:36 mark of the first period on a goal by Mike Robinson, giving the Friars a 1-0 lead. But the lead would not last long, as junior Bryan Vines (Oakville, Ont.) gathered a puck that junior Chris Paradise (St. Paul, Minn.) has sent around the boards from center ice and blistered a shot past Friar goaltender Boyd Ballard that tied the game just 24 seconds later.

The Pioneers would take its only lead of the game at 14:25 of the first period when senior Bjorn Engstrom (Akarp, Sweden) scored his third goal of the season on a pass from senior Judd Stauss (East Grand Forks, Minn.) and junior Jesse Cook (Englewood, Colo.), giving Denver a 2-1 lead.

The Friars would tie the game in the second period when Matt Libby scored his third goal of the season on a pass from Adam Lee at the 16:40 mark and the two teams would enter the third period knotted at two goals apiece.

Providence would be the first to strike in the third period, as Stephen Wood gathered a pass from Mike Robinson and put the puck past a diving Wade Dubielewicz (Invermere, B.C.) to give the Friars a 3-2 lead and silence the Magness Arena crowd. But Barber came to the Pioneers' rescue, taking a perfect pass from Cook and sending a game-tying slap shot past Ballard that tied the score at 3-3.

Providence had three shots in the overtime to Denver's one but neither team could get the puck into the back of the net.

Denver outshot Providence in the game by a 27-18 margin.

Providence goalie Boyd Ballard (24 saves) and Pioneers Jesse Cook (2 assists) and Greg Barber (2 points) were the three stars in the game.

Denver is next in action next Friday, Dec. 1 when they host No. 1 Minnesota at 7:35 p.m. at Magness Arena.
