Ice Hockey Blows Out Alaska-Anchorage, 5-1

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP)(Dec. 8) - Kelly Popadynetz scored a pair of short-handed goals and Denver beat Alaska Anchorage 5-1 Dec. 8 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action.

Popadynetz' first goal broke a 1-1 tie with 46 second left in the second period. He added an assist on a power play goal by David Neale at 10:37 of the third period, then picked up his second goal of the game and sixth of the year at 11:58 of the third.

Greg Barber also added a short-handed goal at 16:46 of the third period.

Denver's Chris Paradise opened scoring at 4:09 of the second period after Alaska-Anchorage mishandled the puck on its own end.

But Alaska Anchorage (5-7-1, 3-5-1 WCHA) knotted the score 33 seconds later when Regg Simon scored on a rebound for his second goal of the season.

The Seawolves, scoreless in 21 power play opportunities coming into the game, failed on nine more opportunities.

The Pioneers (7-7-1, 6-5 WCHA) extended their unbeaten streak to seven despite being outshot 20-18.

Both teams face off again Saturday night.
