LOGAN, Utah (Feb. 18) -- A season-high score on the unven bars to start the night's competition propelled the 11th-ranked University of Denver gymnastics team to a quad meet victory Friday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on the Utah State campus. The Pioneers scored 194.925 points, just off their season high set last week against Michigan State, but still posted the ninth-best team score in school history. The host Aggies were second (194.525), followed by Southern Utah (193.575) and UC-Santa Barbara (190.600).
Denver (10-3) started out on the bars -- its most explosive event -- and set the tone for the night by hitting to a season-high 49.175, which is the fourth-highest total in school history. Senior Debbie Groom (Littleton, Colo.) hit for her third straight meet with a season-high 9.825, and senior Sachi Ena (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) followed with a career-high 9.875. Sophomore Melanie Schiff (Highland Park, N.J.) completed the Pioneers' excellent rotation by tying Ena with her second straight 9.875 as she and Ena tied for second.
The Pioneers moved to the balance beam, where they put together a 48.600. Ena won the event with a 9.800 for her third event win of the season. USU scored a 49.15 on bars to pull within 0.775 of a point halfway through.
The floor exercise came next for Denver, where a number of excellent performances extended the lead. Senior Jennifer White (Tulsa, Okla.) scored her best floor routine since her freshman year by hitting for a season-high 9.85, then Ena followed with a season-high 9.85. junior Jenny Ebdon (Marietta, Ga.) completed the rotation with a winning 9.900 -- her fourth score of 9.9 or above this season -- to give the Pioneers a floor score of 48.75.
Ena led off the vault with a career high-tying 9.65 to complete the second all-around in as many weeks and of her career. Her four-event total of 39.175 is the 12th highest score in school history and the team's sixth above 39.150 this season. Ebdon concluded Denver's vault rotation by winning with a 9.825. Her score of 39.200 in the all-around was good for second place behind Utah State's Christy Denson (39.225).
"I thought we did a great job on bars tonight," said head coach Melissa Kutcher. "It's tough when you have a fall and need everyone else to hit, but they did it. Sachi Ena is doing a great job, and she's capable of doing what she did tonight. She started slow this season with an ankle injury, but she's coming on strong when we need her. We still have yet to put four events together, but I'm happy to come away from tonight with the win."
The Pioneers return home next weekend for the Pioneer Classic, next Saturday, Feb. 26 at 6 p.m. in Hamilton Gymnasium. 1984 U.S. Olympic Gold Medalist Mary Lou Retton will make a special guest appearance that day. Tickets are available at the Ritchie Center box office or by calling (303) 871-2336.
