Maryland-Baltimore County Shuts Down Pioneers

UMBC jumped out to a 8-3 halftime lead by outscoring Denver 5-1 over the last 21 minutes of the first stanza. The Pioneers closed to within four when Nicole Lapotosky scored 10 seconds into the second half, but the Retrievers took control by scoring seven unanswered goals during a 19-minute span of the final frame. Tirocchi sparked the first UMBC run by scoring back-to-back goals while Gerhart led the final charge by scoring the first two Retriever goals of the second half.
Averill Hovey led the Pioneers offensively with two goals. Lapotosky, Mariana Spry and Shannon Jarrett each added a single tally. Sarah Hazard made 13 saves for Denver.
The Pioneers return to action this Sunday when they host Ohio State. Game time for the match on the University of Denver campus is scheduled for noon MST.
