SAN DIEGO - The University of Denver men's soccer team, ranked No. 25 (adidas / NSCAA poll) for the second time this season, dropped its conference opener Friday night, falling to San Diego State, 2-0. The loss snaps Denver's six-game unbeaten streak and drops the Pioneers' record on the season to 6-3-3 overall, 0-1-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Aztecs improve to 5-5-1, 1-0-0.
The Pioneers managed just eight shots on Aztec goalkeeper Tim Edwards, three of which he kept out of the net. San Diego State blistered Denver keeper Parker Jarvis (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) with 15 shots, including 10 in the second half as the Aztecs outshot Denver 15-6 on the afternoon.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, San Diego State got on the board first when freshman Anthony Zoric took a crossed corner kick from junior Ryan Cook and beat Jarvis with a header that gave the Aztecs a 1-0 lead. Senior Enrique Tovar accounted for the insurance goal when he beat Jarvis in the 88th minute, ending any chance of another Pioneers' comeback.
This was the second time this season the Pioneers have earned a national ranking and lost their very next game. In September, the Pioneers earned the first national ranking since moving back to Division I in 1996 and promptly lost a 1-0 decision to Gonzaga in their first game as a nationally ranked team.
Denver will attempt to get back on the winning track Sunday, Oct. 14 when they travel up the California coast to take on MPSF-foe Sacramento State at 2 p.m.
