Former Iowa State Associate Coach to Take Denver Reins
DENVER - The University of Denver has named Terry Carroll as its new head men's basketball coach, Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. M. Dianne Murphy announced today. A press conference to introduce Carroll is scheduled for this Tuesday, April 3, at 1:30 p.m. in the Gold Club at Magness Arena.
Carroll comes to Denver after spending three seasons at Iowa State. He began his stint at ISU as an assistant in 1998 and was named associate head coach prior to the start of the 1999-2000 campaign. Carroll helped guide the Cyclones to back-to-back Big 12 Conference regular-season championships as well as back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 1999-00 and 2000-01. During the 1999-00 season, Iowa State made a strong run in the NCAA tournament, only to be ousted by eventual national champion Michigan State in the Elite Eight.
"After a very thorough national search, we have hired a winner," commented Murphy. "Terry Carroll brings outstanding coaching credentials, experience, success and passion for the game to this head coaching position. I couldn't be more pleased with all of the qualities he has displayed and the experience he brings to Denver, and I look forward to a great partnership with Terry in the years to come."
Prior to his arrival at Iowa State, Carroll spent nine seasons as the head men's basketball coach at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa. During that time, he led the Warriors to an impressive 269-50 record (.842) and back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) titles in 1997 and 1998. He was named national junior college coach of the year in both 1997 and 1998, earned NJCAA District coach of the year accolades four times ('93, '96, '97 and '98) and was honored as GTE Junior College Coach of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches following both national championship runs. Carroll also led IHCC to an NJCAA-record 72 consecutive wins.
His collegiate coaching experience also includes a four-year stint as an assistant coach at Drake University under head coach Gary Garner (1984-88). Carroll also spent three seasons (1981-84) as the head boys basketball coach at Fort Dodge (Iowa) High School and one year (1988-89) at the helm of the boys basketball program at Ottumwa (Iowa) High School.
Following his high school career, Carroll played at Oklahoma State for one season before transferring and finishing his career as the captain of the University of Northern Iowa basketball team. He earned his bachelor's degree from UNI in physical education and health in 1978 and received a master's of science in physical education at Winona State in 1984.
A standout basketball player at Ames (Iowa) High School, Carroll led the Little Cyclones to a state championship in 1973 while earning first team all-state accolades. With Carroll in the lineup, AHS posted an amazing 62-8 mark. A two-sport athlete, Carroll left Ames High School with seven letters in basketball and baseball and was recently inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 1996.
The 46-year-old Carroll and his wife, Barb, have two children, a daughter, Stephanie, (16) and a son, Bill, (12).
