DENTON, Texas - Playing its first match in two weeks due to the tragedies on the East Coast, the University of Denver volleyball team dropped its first match of the Sun Belt Conference season to North Texas in five games (30-19, 27-30, 23-30, 30-27, 15-7).
Sophomore Andrea Baron (West Vancouver, British Columbia / West Vancouver HS) led the Pioneers with 14 kills, and freshman Mary England (Castle Rock, Colo. / Chaparral HS) had the best match of her young Pioneer career, posting six kills, 10 digs and a .455 hitting percentage.
UNT (5-6, 1-0 SBC) dominated the first game, out-killing the Pioneers 13-5 and holding Denver (4-5, 0-1 SBC) to -.115 hitting.
The Pioneers fought back with strong hitting in the middle two games, out-hitting UNT by a .362 to .167 margin. Errors in the service game would catch up to Denver, however, as its 14 service errors and 11 reception errors directly accounted for 25 Lady Eagle points.
"We were bad, then good, then bad, that's probably the simplest way to put it," said head coach Beth Kuwata. "We're not getting consistent play from anyone when we're in a crunch. Mary England did a nice job coming off the bench tonight."
The Pioneers remain on the road this weekend, completing their two-game trip with an SBC match on Sunday at Louisiana-Lafayette. First serve is set for 1 p.m. CST.
