BOZEMAN, Mont. - Senior outside hitter Kellie Savage (Arvada, Colo. / Arvada West HS) led all players with 11 kills to help the University of Denver to a 3-0 win (30-24, 30-26, 30-27) over TCU Saturday afternoon at the Montana State / Holiday Inn Classic. It is the second straight three-game sweep for the Pioneers (4-3), who defeated Indiana State Friday night in the first match of the tournament.
Sophomore middle blocker Laurie Young (Fort Collins, Colo. / Fort Collins HS) celebrated her 21st birthday by adding nine kills, four blocks and a match-high 14 digs for the Pioneers (4-3).
Sophomore Olympia Hughes (Casper, Wyo. / Natrona County HS) led all players with a .269 hitting percentage, as both teams struggled with their hitting. Denver managed just a .081 hitting percentage, yet the Pioneers' 11 team blocks contributed to a dismal -.007 showing by the Horned Frogs (0-6). TCU had 37 attack errors and just 36 kills in the three games.
"This afternoon's match was not pretty. We didn't pass very well, and both teams had a lot of errors, we just made fewer than they did," said head coach Beth Kuwata. "When we needed kills, we got them, and that was the difference. I think we showed that we can put a team away when it counts, but we're still inconsistent. Kellie Savage hit some great balls at the end of the match, and we out-dug and out-blocked our opponent for the second straight match, so that was good."
The Pioneers conclude play in the Holiday Inn Classic later tonight against the host Bobcats at 7 p.m.
