Drummond Named WCHA Rookie Of The Week

Jan. 14, 2002

University of Denver freshman forward Jeff Drummond (Leduc, Alberta) was named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week, the league announced today (Jan. 14).

Drummond helped lead the Pioneers to a two-game, WCHA sweep over visiting Michigan Tech last weekend, as Denver defeated the Huskies, 3-1 Friday and 7-4 Saturday. In Friday's game, Drummond notched his fourth assist of the season, helping on sophomore Connor James' (Calgary, Alberta) goal?Denver?s second of the game?in the first period. That marker turned out to be the game-winner. Saturday, Drummond returned to notch his first-career two-goal game. Both goals came late in the contest, but helped the Pioneers solidify the victory. Drummond?s first goal of the night came five minutes into the third period and gave the Pioneers a 6-4 lead. He notched his second marker of the game with just 16 seconds remaining, helping Denver to the 7-4 win.

With the wins, the Pioneers also moved into first place in the WCHA standings. With 30 points in the WCHA standings, Denver is one point ahead of St. Cloud State, while playing two fewer games than the Huskies.

Drummond and the Pioneers will step out of league-play for the final time this season and put their NCAA-best record of 20-2-0 against two foes from College Hockey America. Denver will host Bemidji State Friday (Jan. 18) in a 7:35 p.m. contest at Magness Arena, before traveling to Air Force for a rare Sunday contest (Jan. 20). The Pioneers and Falcons will face-off at 7:05 p.m. at Cadet Ice Arena.
