DENVER – The Denver Pioneers hockey team is ranked No. 5 nationally in both the latest USCHO.com and USA Hockey polls that were both released on Monday.
The Pioneers are No. 5 in each ranking for the second straight week after being chosen fourth in each list's preseason poll.
Denver is coming off a 1-0-1 opening weekend, as the team tied Air Force 1-1 on the road on Friday before picking up a 6-0 shutout on Saturday over Bentley in the home opener.
Boston University is the new No. 1 squad in each ranking after former No. 1 Western Michigan split its home-and-home series last week to Ferris State and dropped to No. 2. Michigan State, which also lost at home, dropped to No. 3 in the USCHO.com ranking and No. 4 in USA Hockey's list. Michigan moved up to No. 4 in USCHO and No. 3 in USA Hockey. Penn State fell to No. 6 after also suffering a home loss last week.
Teams ranked 2-5 are separated by just 52 points in the USCHO.com ranking and 35 in USA Hockey's list.
The NCHC is tied with the Big Ten and Hockey East for the most schools ranked in the top 10 (three) and its five total ranked squads are third-most in the nation. Joining the Pioneers and Broncos in the rankings are league foes North Dakota at No. 8/8, Arizona State at No. 15/16 and Colorado College at No. 19/20. All nine NCHC squads earned votes in the polls, with Omaha, Miami, Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State all being recognized by the electorate.
