Oct. 18, 2002

Box Score

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Denver men's soccer team dropped its conference opener Friday night, falling to San Jose State, 1-0. The loss is Denver's fourth consecutive and drops the Pioneers' record to 6-8-0 overall, 0-1-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The Spartans improve to 7-7-0, 1-0-0.

The Pioneers managed 15 shots on Spartan goalkeeper Michael Lawrence, two of which he kept out to the net. San Jose State blistered Denver keeper senior Brian Lux (Lakewood, Colo.) with 18 shots, including four in the overtime period as the Spartans out shot Denver 18-15 on the evening.

After a scoreless 90 minutes, San Jose State got on the board first and last when senior Tony Change nudged a rebound past Lux to give the Spartans the 1-0 victory.

This was the second time this season the Pioneers have lost an overtime game. In September, the Pioneers were defeated by Dayton, 3-2. Denver is 1-2 in overtime matches this year with the lone win, a 1-0 victory over Birmingham Southern, coming in the second game of the year on Sept. 1.

This is the first time the Pioneers have lost four consecutive games since 1998 when they dropped their first four games of the season. Five of Denver's eight loses this season have come in the state of California. The Pioneers dropped games to Stanford and California in the adidas / Cal Legacy Classic earlier this year. In their last road trip Denver lost to Cal Poly and Cal State Northridge.

Denver will attempt to get back on the winning track Sunday, Oct. 20 when they host MPSF-foe Sacramento State at noon.
