DENVER, Colo. -
The University of Denver men's soccer team dropped its fifth consecutive game Sunday afternoon, falling to Sacramento State, 2-1. With their second consecutive conference loss, the Pioneers fall to 6-9-0 on the season, 0-2-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Sacramento State improves to 4-6-3, 1-1-0.
After a scoreless first half Denver got on the board first when senior Nic Hartman (Littleton, Colo.) took advantage of a Hornet turnover deep in box and blistered a ball past Sacramento State goalkeeper Matt McDougall.
The Hornets scored in the 58th minute on a shot from David Rose. Rose put in a rebound after teammate Hjalti Kristjansson's header hit the crossbar.
Sacramento State beat Pioneer goalkeeper senior Brian Lux (Lakewood, Colo.) again in the second minute of overtime. Sean McMahon's cross to David Fraser got by Lux to the bottom right of the net.
This was the third time this season and second consecutive time that Denver has lost an overtime game. In September, the Pioneers were defeated by Dayton, 3-2. San Jose State beat Denver, 1-0, last Friday (Oct. 18). The Pioneers are now 1-3 in overtime matches this year with the lone win, a 1-0 victory over Birmingham Southern, coming in the second game of the year on Sept. 1.
This is the first time that Denver has lost five consecutive games since 1984 when it dropped six straight.
The Pioneers are next in action this Friday, Oct. 25 when they take on MPSF foe UNLV at 7:30 p.m. in Las Vegas.
