Pioneer Swimming and Diving Wrap up Speedo Cup Action

Irvine, Calif. - The University of Denver swimming and diving teams completed their final day of events at the Speedo Cup Invitational Saturday in Irvine, California. The women finished at 17th place in the standings with 167 points and the men earned 10th with 276. Both squads performed at their best and posted a combined 27 season-best times. The women contributed nine while the men had 18.
Throughout the weekend, freshman sensation Michaela Amereller (Munich, Germany) was a guiding light for the women. The highlight of her Speedo Cup appearance came on Friday when she finished fifth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.60. Saturday she closed the tournament by earning her third top-20 finish as she took 14th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.17.
The standout for the men was senior Robert Converse (Piedmont, Calif.). Converse finished 16th or better in each of his events and earned his best finish on Saturday when he took 11th place in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.11). Local senior Chase Kelly (Littleton, Colo.) also swam well on Saturday by taking 15th in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.05. Kelly also posted a strong finish on Friday by clinching 21st place in the 400-yard IM with a time of 4:15.86.
The teams will now return home for the winter break and take to the water again with home meets in mid-January. The men start off the 2003 season against in-state rival Air Force on Saturday, January 11 (noon) and the women will square off against New Mexico State on Friday, January 17 (4 p.m.).
