The two-time defending NCAA Champion University of Denver ski team won its fourth meet to maintain its unblemished 2002 season by winning the New Mexico Invitational with 581.5 points. Colorado was second with 570 points and Utah finished third with 546.5 points. Saturday's nordic competition featured a sprint relay for the second straight meet. Denver dominated the event, finishing 1-2 to earn 87 team points in the classical sprint relay. Three-time national champion Pietro Broggini teamed with Ola Berger to win the race, while defending 2000 NCAA classic champion Wolf Wallendorf and Dylan Prosser finished second. The women finished fourth in the event with Niina Karvonen and Tara Hamilton. In the slalom, the women were second behind CU with 74 points. Christina Metzger was third, just a little over a minute behind the winner Mia Cullman from CU. Sophie Ormond finished fifth just seven hundredths of a second behind her teammate. Denver's Cain Mahan finished fourth in the salom to lead the men who were also second trailing CU by just seven points (77-70). In Friday's events, the Denver men turned in their usual performance, placing three racers in the top four. Broggini won the men's 15K in a 25:04.2 clocking, and Berger was just behind him at 25:10.9. Wallendorf finished fourth in a time of 26:33.6. The women held their own as Karvonen led the way by finishing sixth and Karin Camenisch was 17th and Tara Hamilton came in 22nd. In the giant slalom event, the men placed three racers in the top 10, led by David Lamb who finished third in a time of 2:06.65. Dominik Schweiger was sixth and Chris Berg was eighth. The women were led by Ormond who finished third in a time of 2:11.91 and Barbara Knor was seventh while Metzger was 11th. Next up is the NCAA West Regional, scheduled for February 27-28 in Anchorage, Alaska. Denver will then remain in Alaska for the NCAA Championships, which will begin March 6.
