LARAMIE, Wyo. - The University of Denver volleyball team had a rough season-opening match Tuesday night, committing 10 service errors and allowing 47 Wyoming kills in a 3-0 sweep to the Cowgirls at the MultiPurpose Gym. Denver dropped its season opener and fell to 0-1 on the season. Wyoming improved to 4-0 with the win.
The Pioneers had an attack percentage of just .141 on the night, led by sophomore Mary England's (Castle Rock, Colo.) team-leading .444. She committed just one attacking error in 18 chances in the three games. Wyoming was very proficient on the attack, as the Pioneers allowed 47 Cowgirl kills while digging out just 12 UW attack chances.
"Our team digging tonight was anything but desirable," head coach Beth Kuwata said. "I thought that was one phase of the game that we were prepared for and that wasn't the case. I think tonight was a case of our inexperience showing and our need to grow as a team. We have a lot of areas to improve upon and a short time to do so."
The Pioneers are next in action this Friday, September 6 when they open play in the University of Nevada Invitational in Reno, Nev. Denver opens play versus the host school on Friday at 8 p.m.
