FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - The University of Denver women's soccer defeated Northern Arizona 2-1, in its second road game of the weekend at Lumberjack Stadium on Sunday, October 12. The win boosts the Pioneers' record to 10-2-0 (2-1-0) on the season and drops the Lumberjacks to 3-6-3. Seniors Mychael Movius (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Jenni Harris (Littleton, Colo.) both contributed goals to Denver's victory.
In a bizarre twist of events, junior goalkeeper Cassandra Kaeding (Saugus, Calif.) collided with an NAU player and injured her knee just 43 seconds into the game. Freshman goalkeeper Danielle Wiley (Littleton, Colo.) had received a red card in the game against North Texas on Friday, which forced the Pioneers to put junior defender Leah Becherer (Oakland, Calif.) in goal for the remainder of the first half.
Despite a rookie goalie, Denver struck first as senior Jamie Norwood (Littleton, Colo.) recorded her first assist of the day by launching a perfect corner kick. Movius, playing in only her third game since her ACL injury, headed the ball into the net for her third goal of the season.
The Lumberjacks responded to the Pioneers' first tally and scored their only goal of the day from Sierra Cristiano in the 36th minute. Denver was quick to react as only 24 seconds later Norwood recorded her second assist of the game and sixth of the season as she sent a pass right to Harris' foot. Harris netted her seventh goal of the season and is tied with freshman Lleane Grimditch (Boulder, Colo.) for the lead in scoring with 15 points.
The second half of the game was as intense as the first. The teams battled it out as NAU recorded eight fouls and Denver totaled 12 in the second half. The Lumberjacks remained scoreless, thanks to rookie goalie junior Carlynn McCallum (Denver, Colo.). McCallum made two saves on the day to clinch the win.
"We had a very well-played game on the road," head coach Jeff Hooker said. "Our girls were put in a situation they had never been in before. They not only survived, but thrived and continued to do the right thing."
Denver continues on the road next Friday, October 17, to face conference foe Middle Tennessee at 2 p.m. MT. Conference action continues in Bowling Green, Ky., on Sunday, October 19, when Denver takes on Western Kentucky at 1 p.m. MT.
