Box Score

SAN DIEGO - Freshman forward Kyle Christensen (Layton, Utah) scored the Pioneers' lone goal as the University of Denver men's soccer team battled San Diego State to a, 1-1, tie in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action this evening at the SDSU Sports Deck. With the tie, Denver's mark moves to 7-6-2, 1-1-1. The Aztecs are now 7-4-2, 1-0-1.

Denver opened the first half with high energy and set the pace of the match for first 20 minutes. Christensen scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season when he got a head on a bouncing ball to put it over SDSU goalkeeper Colin Hanke. Sophomore midfielder Travis Hendricks (Englewood, Colo.) setup the play. The Aztecs settled down and finished the first period with a 12-6 shot advantage.

Hanke made five saves in 110 minutes of action.

San Diego State controlled the second half and tied the score in the 70th minute. Eric Wohl lobbed a pass to Blake Perry who centered the ball right to the head of Matt Couch. Couch beat Denver goalkeeper Lami Harmon (Newark, Del.) topside for his second goal of the season.

Harmon was superb on the day, recording a career-high nine saves.

"Lami (Harmon) kept us the match and gave a chance to win," said Head Coach Chad Ashton. "If he didn't play as well as he did we would have easily gone home with a loss."

Both overtime periods saw more of the same as SDSU set the pace, but could not solve Harmon.

The Aztecs outshot the Pioneers 32-11, including a 15-2 edge in the second half.

Denver returns to the friendly confines of Pioneer Field on Sunday, October 26, when the Pioneers play host to MPSF rival New Mexico. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
