DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer team out shot Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rival UNLV 18-3, but it was not enough as the Rebels defeated the Pioneers, 1-0, this afternoon in Denver's last home match of the season. With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 7-8-2, 1-3-1. UNLV improves to 5-11-0, 2-3-0.
Denver dominated the early part of the match, but the Rebels capitalized on their first scoring opportunity. Alex Hernandez beat Pioneer goalkeeper Lami Harmon (Newark, Del.) on a breakaway in the 32nd minute.
Denver out shot UNLV 8-1 in the first half and 10-2 in the second, but could not solve Rebel goalkeeper, Peter Clitheroe. Freshman Kyle Christensen (Layton, Utah) led the Pioneers with five shots.
"UNLV took advantage of their best scoring chance, and we were just unable to do the same," said Denver Head Coach Chad Ashton. "Hopefully we can rebound and come out strong against Air Force next week."
The Pioneers conclude the regular season when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to battle MPSF rival Air Force on Sun., Nov. 9, at 1 p.m.
