Box Score

DENVER - Freshman James Merriman (Nanaimo, B.C.) and sophomore Thomas Flynn (Broomfield, Colo.) each netted two goals as the University of Denver men's soccer team defeated the Colorado School of Mines, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field. Denver's third consecutive victory improves the Pioneers' mark to 6-4-1. CSM falls to 5-7-0.

"James (Merriman) and Thomas (Flynn) both played really well today," said Head Coach Chad Ashton. "They put themselves in position to take advantage of the opportunities their fellow teammates setup for them."

Merriman used his head to put Denver on the board in the eighth minute. Fellow freshman Ben Mendozza (Aurora, Colo.) headed the ball over to Merriman who then beat CSM's goalkeeper Kevin Calloway, on what can only be described as a bang-bang play. The head-to-head connection put the Pioneers in front, 1-0.

Not to be outdone, Flynn scored his third goal of the season in the 17th minute. Fellow sophomore Travis Hendricks (Englewood, Colo.) crossed a ball right off the diving Flynn's head. The goal increased Denver's margin to 2-0.

The second half stared much like the first, with the Pioneers scoring an early goal. Merriman put home his second goal of the day off a long cross from sophomore Christian Bowers (Holladay, Utah). Senior Brian Kneuer (Littleton, Colo.) set up the play with a great ball to the corner.

Denver added another goal when Flynn beat an Oredigger defender and keeper after a pass from Bowers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lami Harmon's (Newark, Del.) recorded his third shutout of the year.

The Pioneers had a 20-7 edge in shots and a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

Denver continues its three-match homestand on Sunday, October 12, when it plays host to Alabama A&M at 11 a.m.
