IRVINE, Calif. - The University of Denver men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the Big West Conference Shootout Saturday, November 01, by going 3-1 in the dual meet. The Pioneers went 4-4 for the entire meet.
The Pioneers lost to host UC Irvine 75-38 in their first match, and then defeated Cal State Northridge 88-23, Cal Poly 86-19 and Pacific 11-0.
The Pioneers 400-yard medley relay team opened the day with a seventh place finish (3:38.39). Freshman Craig Jollands (Hillcrest, South Africa) continued to impress in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:41.21) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.23), finishing sixth and seventh in each event respectively.
Also excelling in the freestyle events were junior Caleb Johnson (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Brian Flaherty (Granit Bay, Calif.). Johnson finished eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.7) and Flaherty took ninth in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:07.28).
The Pioneers showed great potential in the butterfly events as well. Freshman Alex McNally (Lonetree, Colo.) recorded his second top-10 finish of the meet with a time of 1:58.51 in the 200-yard butterfly. Right on his heels was junior Jordan Chittley (Toronto, Ontario) who finished the 200-yard butterfly in 10th place with a time of 1:58.86.
Senior John Conyers (Lakewood, Colo.) added points to the Pioneer's total by finishing fifth in both the 1-meter dive (197.3) and in the 3-meter dive (196.45). Denver wrapped up the meet with a fifth place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:13.96).
"This was a great experience filled with good competition and great racing," head coach Jim Henry said. "This was especially impressive because it was in a time of tough training. It was a mental test and the guys passed it well. There were lots of personal bests and if we look at where we are now, we are way ahead of schedule. We look forward to facing Air Force next weekend."
The Pioneers return to action Friday, November 7, 2003 when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face the Air Force Academy. The first event is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. MT.
