Box Score
DENVER -
Sophomore center Gabe Gauthier (Buena Park, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal in the first period and assisted on another as No. 10 Denver snapped a two-game losing streak with a 4-0 win over Findlay Friday night at Magness Arena. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 8-4-1. Findlay drops to 4-8-1.
The Pioneers got the first goal of the game just three minutes into the first period when Gauthier took a pass from senior Connor James (Calgary, Alberta) in the low crease and put a shot past Oiler goaltender Will Hooper to give Denver a 1-0 lead. The goal extended Gauthier's career-high scoring streak to five games.
Denver finally got some breathing room in the third period when Gauthier seized a loose puck in his own end and bounced a pass off the boards in the neutral zone to a streaking Jussi Halme (Nokia, Finland). Halme skated in front of an Oiler defenseman and had a clear shot to the net, where he faked to his right and held the puck and beat Hooper glove-side to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. Denver got a power play goal by Lukas Dora (Lednice, Czech Republic) and freshman J.D. Corbin (Littleton, Colo.) added his first career goal to account for the final.
"I'm very pleased with how we started the third period," Denver head coach George Gwozdecky said. "When we got the second goal it was crucial for us and it gave us the cushion we needed. We did some good things tonight on the power play and I'm pleased with how we competed throughout the game. We took some steps in the right direction in tonight's game."
Denver senior goaltender Adam Berkhoel (Woodbury, Minn.) stopped all 20 Findlay shots and recorded his third shutout of the season and the eighth of his career, tying Wade Dubielewicz for the second-most all-time at Denver. Gerry Powers (1966-69) holds the school record with 13 career shutouts.
The Pioneers return to action tomorrow night at in-state rival Air Force. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. MT at Cadet Ice Arena.
