DENVER - The Denver Pioneers men's tennis team defeated the University of Creighton, 7-0, at the Stapleton Tennis Pavillion to bring their record to 7-4. The win marks the second time that the team has swept their opponent this season.
Junior Urban Ljubic (Ljubljana, Slovenia) won the decisive match of the evening by outgunning Creighton's Kevin Otto, 6-2, 6-4, in No. 1 singles. This came after Ljubic joined freshman teammate Nejc Smole (Ljubljana, Slovenia) to defeat Otto and Tom McCarthy of Creighton, 8-3, in No. 1 doubles. The team of freshman Colin Day (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore Jason Tan (Monnickendam, Netherlands) also contributed to the doubles win with an 8-3 victory over Creighton's Evan Kimura and Eduardo Pignatari.
Junior Hans Peter Gaber (Wassengarten, Austria) beat Creighton's Richard Gonzales in two sets, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 4 singles to stretch his winning streak to seven matches. Freshman Brian West (Camberley, Surrey) contributed with a strong effort by sweeping his opponent, 6-0, 6-0, in No. 6 singles. Smole, Tan and freshman Viktor Zetterholm (Nacka, Sweden) also accounted for three Pioneer points with singles wins in their respective matches.
