Sophomore forward Kyle Christensen (Layton, Utah) scored the game-wining goal as the University of Denver men's soccer team defeated the San Diego State Aztecs, 2-1, this afternoon in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action in San Diego, Calif. The Pioneers improve to 6-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the MPSF. SDSU falls to 2-8-1, 2-2.
After a scoreless first half San Diego State's Frank Caruso put the Aztecs up 1-0 in the 50th minute. The Pioneers responded just three minutes later as senior midfielder/defender Mark Wellen (Littleton, Colo.) tied the game at 1-1. Sophomore midfielder Mike Seager (Victoria, B.C.) provided the assist.
Junior defender Thomas Flynn (Broomfield, Colo.) assisted on Christensen's winning goal in the 70th minute. It was Christensen's third goal of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Matt Bredehoft (Fort Collins, Colo.) allowed only one goal, while making four saves.
The Pioneers outshot the Aztecs, 13-11.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday, October 17, when they host MPSF rival No. 5 New Mexico at 1 p.m.
