Senior forward Christian Bowers (Holladay, Utah) and junior midfielder Travis Hendricks (Englewood, Colo.) each scored as the University of Denver men's soccer team defeated the Sacramento State Hornets, 2-1, on Friday in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. Denver's third consecutive victory improves its record to 8-3-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the MPSF. The Hornets fall to 4-8-1, 3-4.
The Pioneers first scored in the 12th minute when the Hornets gave up possession of the ball in their own defensive third. Hendricks was able to score his team-best sixth goal the season when he put his shot far post, past Hornet goalkeeper Matt McDougall.
Denver struck again seven minutes later, when sophomore forward Kyle Christensen (Layton, Utah) floated a ball over the top of the defense to Bowers. Bowers brought the ball down and aimed far post past a diving McDougall to make the score, 2-0.
Sacramento State came on strong in the second half, outshooting the Pioneers 3-1 and taking all five of their corner kicks in the final 45 minutes.
Ryan Rhoads put the Hornets on the board in the 71st minute, when he volleyed in a throw-in from Eric Ortiz, past Denver goalkeeper Justin Durst (Destin, Fla.), making the score 2-1.
Denver held on for the final 19 minutes to secure the victory.
The Pioneers outshot the Hornets 10-5, led by Hendricks and Christensen, who each had two shot on frame.
The Pioneers return to action Sunday, October 24, when they travel to San Jose, Calif. to battle MPSF foe San Jose State at 2 p.m. MT.
