Men and Women Both Finish Second at Early Bird Invitational

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The University of Denver men and women swimming and diving team both finished the weekend in second place at the Early Bird Invitational in Fort Collins, Colo. with 969 and 813.5 points respectively. The men finished ahead of Air Force, Colorado, Colorado School of Mines and Metro State, while the women finished ahead of Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado School of Mines, Colorado, Metro State and Nebraska-Kearney.
On the women's side, freshmen Karen Iverson (Littleton, Colo.) and Kelsey Totura (Castle Rock, Colo.) highlighted the night for the Pioneers both having three first-place finishes in their first intercollegiate meet.
Iverson had a stellar weekend winning the 200-yard IM (2:08.97), the 400-yard IM (4:36.87) and the 200-butterfly (2:08.39). She also placed second in the 100-yard butterfly (58.98).
Totura also had an excellent weekend capturing the 200-yard free (1:54.00), 100-yard back (59.34) and 200-yard back (2:07.35).
Sophomore Harmony Zeller (Arvada, Colo.) dominated the distance freestyle events blowing away her competition in the 1650-yard with her nearest competitor almost 20 seconds behind her (7:38.91). She also took second in the 500-yard free (5:08.34).
The women triumphed in the relays winning three of five. They won the 400-yard medley (3:58.05), 800-yard free (7:44.56) and 400-yard free (3:33.64) and placed second in 200-yard free (1:37.91) and the 200-yard medley (1:51.62).
Overall the women captured 10 first place finishes. The men also fared well winning one event and having top-10 finishes in all of the events.
On the men's side, in their first intercollegiate meet, freshman Matt Diotte (Auburn, Wash.) highlighted the weekend by winning the 50-yard free (21.53) and taking second in the 100-yard free (47.41). Freshman Evan Harper (Morris, Ill.) also swam well placing second in the 100-yard back (52.73) and third in the 100-yard butterfly (53.01).
Sophomore Craig Jollands (Hillcrest, South Africa) had three second-place finishes in the 500-yard free (4:37.53), 200-yard back (1:58.18) and in the 200-yard free (1:43.76).
The men also swam well in the relays winning the 200-yard free (1:26.72) and placing second in 400 yard medley (3:31.04), 200-yard medley (1:35.27), 800-yard free (7:05.14) and 400-yard free (3:11.16).
The men and women's swimming and diving team return to action against Air Force in their first dual meet of the season Thursday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m.
