DENVER -
Junior midfielder Travis Hendricks (Englewood, Colo.) scored two goals to lead the University of Denver men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over the Sacramento State Hornets in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play this afternoon at Pioneer Field. Denver's second consecutive win improves its record to 5-2-1 overall and 2-0-0 in MPSF play. Sacramento State falls to 1-6-1, 0-2-0.
"We played a good first half, but our intensity and passion dropped during the second," Head Coach Chad Ashton said. "We need to build better habits and put an entire game together."
Denver scored early as a Kyle Christensen (Layton, Utah) throw-in found the feet of Hendricks who notched his first goal of day in the 14th minute. Newcomer Jacob Chase (Golden, Colo.) added the Pioneers' second score 15 minutes later on a breakaway. Two-sport star Scott Davidson's (Guilford, Conn.) pass allowed Chase to beat the Hornet defenders.
Hendricks tallied his second goal of the afternoon right after halftime. Hornet goalkeeper Matt McDougall was unable to round up the ball in the box, allowing Hendricks to score on an empty net in the 53rd minute.
Senior defenseman Liam Girard (Victoria, B.C.) put home a penalty kick for Denver's fourth and finally tally.
Jesse Manton scored the Hornets lone goal.
Once again the Pioneers outshot (22-9) their opponent.
Newcomer Justin Durst (Destin, Fla.) registered the win in goal while making three saves.
The Pioneers return to action on Friday, October 8, when they travel to play MPSF rival UNLV at 8 p.m. MT.
