DENVER - The University of Denver volleyball team held New Mexico State to just 48 kills but the Aggies recorded a .361 attack percentage as a team and swept the Pioneers 3-0 (18-30, 21-30, 22-30) Sunday afternoon in Hamilton Gymnasium. Denver's fourth consecutive loss drops the Pioneers to 10-13 overall, 4-7 in the Sun Belt Conference. NMSU improves to 23-2, 11-0.
New Mexico State came out with a powerful first game, recording 18 kills and a match-high .517 hitting percentage in winning, 30-18. The Aggies were almost equally as efficient in the second game, recording 17 kills and a .438 hitting percentage.
Denver had its chances in the third game and held a 10-9 lead but NMSU scored 11 of the next 14 points to end any chances of a Denver comeback.
Junior Amanda Millard (Southlake, Texas) led the Pioneers in kills for the third straight match, recording a match-high 13. She has had at least 12 kills in each of the last five matches. Freshman Kim Muller (Ballwin, Mo.) was the other Denver player with double digit kills as she recorded 11.
"There's a reason they've won 29 conference matches in a row," head coach Beth Kuwata said. "They are very efficient offensively and we saw that today. We tried to be more aggressive with our floor defense and our blocking but they were still able to be efficient. I think if we could have gotten into our system a bit better it could have been an interesting match but we weren't able to do that."
Denver is next in action next Friday, Nov. 5 when it takes on Louisiana-Lafayette at 4 p.m.
