DENVER - The University of Denver women's soccer team recorded an 8-4 shots on goal advantage but were only able to push one goal across as the Pioneers tied Northern Arizona, 1-1 Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field. With its second tie of the season, the Pioneers' record now stands at 3-8-2. Northern Arizona is 3-6-2.
Following a scoreless first half in which Denver had the only solid scoring opportunity, Northern Arizona struck first with a goal in the 59th minute as Stefanie Smith found the back of the net with a shot from the center of the field nearly 30 yards out. Denver goalkeeper Cassondra Kaeding (Saugus, Calif.) made a dive to her right in an attempt to get a hand on it but it was just out of her reach.
The Pioneers got the equalizer in the 78th minute as freshman Taryn Hemmings (Greeley, Colo.) took a pass from fellow freshman Danielle Kirschner (Hewlett, N.Y.) at the top of the 18' line and blistered a shot that beat NAU keeper Andrea Berra in the upper right corner of the net. It was Hemmings' second goal of the season and the first career assist for Kirschner.
Denver is next in action on Sunday when it takes on North Texas in a key Sun Belt Conference battle at noon at Pioneer Field.
