McElhinney Shuts Down Pioneers

Nov. 13, 2004

Box Score

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Senior Curtis McElhinney stopped 41 shots and Colorado College used goals by Mark Stuart, John Brunkhorst and Scott McCulloch to defeat the 11th-ranked Denver Pioneers, 3-1, tonight in Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) play before a standing-room only crowd of 7,686 at World Arena. The fourth-ranked Tigers improve to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the WCHA, while Denver falls to 4-4, 3-2.

"Give full credit to Colorado College for the win tonight," head coach George Gwozdecky said. "We had a strong first period and great third period, but we could not solve (Curtis) McElhinney. We will be ready for a full 60 minutes tomorrow night at our place."

McElhinney stopped seven shots in the first, 11 in the second and 25 in the third for his fourth win of the season. McElhinney also keyed the Tiger penalty-kill unit that held Denver to a 0-for-8 effort on the power play and helped CC win in the 250th meeting between the two in-state rivals.

Stuart one-timed a pass from the top of the right faceoff circle for the lone score of the first period. Denver had several scoring chances, but McElhinney stopped all seven shots by Denver in the period.

Brunkhorst tipped in a loose puck in an unguarded slot to give Colorado College a 2-0 lead with 16:10 left in the second period and McCulloch redirected a shot by Lee Sweatt on a delayed-penalty with 17 seconds left for the third Tiger goal.

Freshman Tom May (Eagan, Minn.) scored the Pioneers' lone goal of the night on an unassisted blast from the top of the right faceoff circle at 1:24 of the third period. May walked around Tiger forward Trevor Frischmon for his first career goal.

Sophomore Glenn Fisher (Edmonton, Alberta) was the tough-luck loser for Denver with 19 saves. The loss was Denver's third on Friday night this season and fourth against ranked teams. Senior Jeff Drummond's (Leduc, Alberta) four-game scoring streak was halted as Denver swallowed its third road loss of the season. Denver outshot Colorado College, 25-4, in the third period and 42-22 in the game.

The Pioneers and Tigers will faceoff tomorrow night at sold out Magness Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07 p.m.
