Final Stats
University of Denver women's basketball team fell to the University of Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse on Tuesday, 67-44. The Pioneers fall to 0-3 on the season while Kansas improved to 2-2
In the first two games of the season, the Pioneers staged remarkable rallies in the second half to take the lead. Against Kansas, the Pioneers fell behind by as many as 33 points and relinquished a 67-43 decision. After trailing by 26 points in the first half, Denver outscored Kansas in the second stanza (29-26), but fell short of the rallies in the previous to games.
Crystal Kemp led all scores with 18 points, while Erica Hallman added 27 points. Kansas shot 50 percent from the field for the game and 7-18 from long range. Sarah Cyran and Sara Benham each scored 10 points to lead the Pioneers. Benham also added seven rebounds to lead the team. The Pioneers shot just 33.3 percent from the field and made three long range buckets on the night.
"This game was a lot like our first two games," Head Coach Pam Tanner said. "Our first 20 minutes we struggled, and our last 20 minutes have been really, really good. We played strong and aggressive and the results have been good too. We need to do a better job in the first 20 minutes of the basketball game."
In the first half, Denver dug itself a hole to start the game 20-6. Kansas unleashed four three pointers, and Crystal Kemp threw in eight points to fuel the KU flurry. Denver did not recover, suffering five and eight minute scoring droughts. Kemp finished the half with 14 points, and Erica Hallman added 14 points, including three 3-pointers. Denver trailed 41-15 at the end of one half of play.
The Pioneers return home to host Fresno State on Thursday (Dec. 2) at 7 p.m., in Magness Arena. The game is scheduled to be televised by FSN Rocky Mountain with Dan Kelly (play-by-play), Sandy Williams (color analyst) and Vanessa Hughes (sideline).
