Tigers Tame Pioneers, 1-0

DENVER - The University of Denver men's soccer team was shutout, 1-0, by the Towson Tigers this afternoon in the final game of the John Byrden Classic at Pioneer Field. The Pioneers, who fall to 3-1, were a man up for 55 minutes of the match.

The Tigers' (3-1-1) Sebastian Haensel scored the game's lone goal on a ball that was misplayed by newcomer Justin Durst (Destin, Fla.) in the 23rd minute.

Denver had several chances to tie the game in the second half, including a missed open net by junior midfielder Travis Hendricks (Englewood, Colo.) and a unsuccessful penalty kick by senior back Liam Girard (Victoria, B.C.).

Durst and freshman Matt Bredehoft (Fort Collins, Colo.) each played a half in goal, with Durst registering the loss. The two combined to make two saves off eight Towson shots.

Zak Thompson recorded the win for the Tigers.

The Pioneers outshot Towson, 23-8.

The Alabama A&M Bulldogs (2-2-1) defeated the Loyola Chicago Ramblers (0-4-1), 3-2, in the first game of the day. Eugene Sepuya tallied two goals for the Bulldogs, including the game winner in the 88th minute.

The Pioneers will return to action next weekend at the Husky Invitational hosted by the University of Washington. Denver will face UC Riverside on Friday, Sept. 17, at 5:30 p.m. MT, and Washington on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 2:30 p.m. MT.
