No. 14 Denver Gymnastics Wins Quadrangular Meet

DENVER - Sophomore Casey Dobyns (Woodinville, Wash.) set career-highs with a 9.95 on vault and a 9.9 on floor exercise and Pioneer gymnasts won all four events and the all-around in scoring a 195.275 Saturday night in a first-place finish in a quadrangular meet at Hamilton Gymnasium. The Pioneers (195.275) defeated North Carolina State (19.575), Boise State (187.850) and UC Davis (187.475) to improve to 6-2 on the season.

Dobyns won both the vault and floor exercise titles, raising her season total of event titles to three. Her vault title was the first of her career.

Senior Stephanie Lorber (San Carlos, Calif.) also won the first event title of her career Saturday, finishing first with a 9.75 on uneven bars in which just four of the 24 competitors on the event scored a 9.7 or higher. Denver gymnasts took five of the top six spots as Katie Andrews (Crawfordsville, Ind.) finished tied for second with a 9.725 and freshman Courtney Butler (Naperville, Ill.) finished fourth with a 9.7.

Freshman Sasha Sullivan (Glen Allen, Va.) won her third event in the last three meets with a 9.85 on balance beam, her first career title on that event. The 9.85 tied her personal-best score set just last Tuesday and edged teammate Cassidy Willingham (Mountain View, Calif.), who finished second with a 9.8.

Sophomore Heather Huffaker (DeSoto, Texas) won the all-around title with a score of 38.250. Huffaker, ranked No. 1 in the nation on vault this week, finished tied for second with Butler on the event with a 9.85.

Two Pioneers set career-highs on floor exercise in addition to Dobyns, with Andrews posting a 9.775 to finish tied for sixth and freshman Sierra Bertholomey (Albuquerque, N.M.) posting a 9.7 in her first collegiate meet. Denver took each of the top three spots in the event, with Dobyns in first followed by Huffaker and Sullivan, who both posted scores of 9.875.

The Pioneers are next in action next Saturday, Jan. 29 when they travel to take on Illinois at 6 p.m. MST.
