Pioneers Finish Day One at Denver Invitational

WINTER PARK, Colo. - The University of Denver ski team finished day one of competition at the Denver Invitational in Winter Park, Colo., and Snow Mountain Ranch, Colo., this afternoon. The men paced the Pioneers and claimed two event titles, giant slalom and 10K freestyle race, to end the day in second place with 270 points. Utah leads with 279 overall points.

The men won the giant slalom title with 81 points. All-American Dominik Schweiger (Wangle, Austria) finished in second place with a time of 1:51.59 and 29 points, while fellow Pioneer All-American David Lamb (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) finished just eight-hundredths of a second behind Schweiger in third place to earn 28 points. Lars Ola Kjos rounded out the scoring for Denver in seventh place and 24 points.

Florence Roujas (Embrun, France) came out of the gates with fastest morning and afternoon runs to capture her third giant slalom title with a combined time of 1:59.82. She edged her nearest competitor by 1.24 seconds. Lindsay McClure (Hood River, Ore.) finished ninth with 22 points and Jacqueline Marceau (Wayzata, Minn.) finished 28th with seven points. The women earned 55 points and tied for fourth place with New Mexico. Utah won the event title with 72 points.

Denver won the men's 10K freestyle race with 81 total points and three Pioneers finishing in the top-five. Rene Reisshauer (Oberhof, Germany) led the way in third place with a time of 24:58.8 and earned 28 points. Andre Haugsboe (Trondheim, Norway) finished fourth with 27 points and John Stene (Trondheim, Norway) rounded out the scoring for the men with 26 points. Fellow Pioneer Haavard Selseng (Sogndal, Norway) finished in sixth place, but did not earn any team points because only the top three finishers from each school score. Colorado's Erling Christiansen won the men's 10K freestyle race with a time of 24:51.2.

In the women's 5K race, the Denver women finished fifth overall with 53 points behind New Mexico (78), Utah (78), Montana State (58) and Alaska Anchorage (56). Bodil Ryste (Trondheim, Norway) was the top Pioneer finisher in 13th place and 19 points with Julia Swieder (Oberhof, Germany) right behind her in 14th place and 18 points. Kara LaPoint (Truckee, Calif.) also contributed with 16 points in 18th place.

The Pioneers will wrap up competition at the Denver Invitational tomorrow in Winter Park, Colo., and Snow Mountain Ranch, Colo.
