MOBILE, Ala. -- Amanda Millard (South Lake, Texas) grabbed 13 kills and Ashly Ball (Chula Vista, Calif.) tallied 10 digs in the Pioneers 30-19, 32-30, 30-28 sweep of South Alabama Saturday. DU came out of their first weekend in Sun Belt conference action with two wins on the road and move to 8-5 overall. South Alabama falls to 6-11 on the season and is still looking for their first conference victory.
Head coach Beth Kuwata is pleased that the team was able to come out of the weekend with two wins, but feels there is still plenty of work to be done.
"Overall, we were a little inconsistent in our play this weekend," Kuwata said. "There are some fundamentals that we have to continue to work on, and we are still looking to find that rhythm to carry us through the entire match. It may not have been pretty, but when it comes down to it, we were able accomplish our goal by getting two wins this weekend and I am pleased with that."
South Alabama kept the each game close, committing minimal errors. However, defensive pressure by DU kept the Jaguars to a hitting percentage of .183. Kim Mueller (Ballwin, Mo.) led the Pioneers with a hitting percentage of .588 on 17 attempts. Millard and Mueller also contributed three blocks apiece.
With this weekend just marking the beginning of a long conference season, the Pioneers still have room for improvement.
"With the season still very young, this team still has a long way to go with a lot left to accomplish," Kuwata commented. "It's very exciting to know what we are capable of and that we are getting better with every game."
