DU Men's Soccer Drops Fourth Consecutive

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose State men's soccer team (8-4-2, 4-1 MPSF) defeated Denver (5-7-1, 1-4) 3-1 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action Sunday, October 23, 2005.

The Spartans took control early with a goal at 4:48 by Dan Oka on a header off the rebound from a header by Dylan Pender. The Spartans scored again at 9:31 when Ismael Ibarra, last week's MPSF Brine Player of the Week, scored his fifth goal of the season on a shot that was deflected from a corner kick. Johnny Gonzalez and Gavin Wenyon were credited with assists on the goal. It was Wenyon's team-leading eighth assist of the year.

Gonzalez scored at 28:08 on a right from the right to the left corner. Hiroki Akiyam was credited with the assist.

The Pioneers' lone goal of the afternoon was scored when senior back Liam Girard (Victoria, B.C.) scored on a penalty kick at 81:19 on Spartan goalkeeper Brent Douglas.

Jarred Schwandt (Libertyville, Ill.) got the nod in goal and registered five saves in his first game as a Pioneer.

The Pioneers take on Sacramento State at home to continue MPSF action Friday, Oct. 28 at Pioneer Field. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.
