DENVER - Nelson Diaz' goal three minutes into overtime propelled the San Jose State Spartans over the University of Denver men's soccer team, 2-1, today at Pioneer Field in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. The loss drops the Pioneers to 6-8-1 overall and 2-5-0 in the MPSF, while the Spartans improve to 10-4-1, 6-1-0.
Diaz scored off a rebound after slipping through DU's defense. Diaz' first shot ricocheted off sophomore keeper Matt Bredehoft (Fort Collins, Colo.) hands right back to Diaz who then put it home.
SJSU's Savio Carrijo scored the match's first goal in the 67th minute. Ismael Ibarra's header off a corner kick hit the post and bounced right to Carrijo who put the ball into the empty net.
Senior forward Scott Davidson (Guilford, Conn.) tallied the equalizer in the 72nd minute when he collected a loose ball and beat Spartan keeper Richard Mann. Senior back Liam Girard (Victoria, B.C.) started the play with a free kick that found the head of junior Blake Gaiser (Englewood, Colo.).
Bredehoft made two saves on the day, Mann tallied six.
Forty-eight fouls were called.
The Pioneers return to action on Sun., Nov. 6 when they battle instate rival Air Force in Colorado Springs at 1 p.m.
DU honored its five seniors -Davidson, Thomas Flynn (Broomfield, Colo.), Girard, Travis Hendricks (Englewood, Colo.) and Zack Kobilca (Aurora, Colo.) before the match.
