Final Stats
DENVER - The University of Denver men and women's swimming and diving teams set a new pool record en route to a sweep of Wyoming this afternoon in El Pomar Natatorium. The Pioneers defeated the Cowboy's 154-89 on the women's side and 135-108 on the men's side. The men's 200-medley relay set a new pool-record with a time of 1:33.29.
"Everyone contributed today, which is the biggest reason that we got the result that we did," head coach Jim Henry said. "The team did a great job over the three days that we competed this week and it's a promising sign of what's to come in the future. I'm really looking forward to the end of the season."
DU led the meet from start to finish, with both the men and women claiming top honors in the 200-medley relay 400-free relay, 200-free, 100-free and 200-back. On the women's side Harmony Zeller (Arvada, Colo.) and Caitlin Summers (Tigard, Ore.) continued their dominance of the distance freestyle events. Summers took the top spot in the 1000-free with a time of 10:42.29, while Zeller claimed the top spot in the 500-free with a time of 5:11.95. In the sprint freestyle Lauren Bortnowski (Houston, Texas) led the way, taking top honors in the 50 and 100-free with times of 24.42 and 52.74, respectively. Michaela Amereller (Munich, Germany) took first-place in the 200-free with a time of 1:54.96. In the 200-back Kelsey Totura (Castle Rock, Colo.) and Michele Lowry (Hailey, Idaho) finished first and second, respectively. Totura was .41 seconds away from setting a new school record.
On the men's side, Craig Jollands (Hillcrest, South Africa) took top honors in both the 200-free (1:44.34) and 200-back (1:52.64). The Pioneers had an excellent showing in the sprint freestyle events taking the top four spots in the 50-free and the top three spots in the 100-free. Matt Diotte (Auburn, Wash.) led the way in both events capturing top honors in both. Nathan West (Englewood, Colo.) took runner-up honors in the 1000-free with at time of 10:01.40. Marcus Christianson (Hutchinson, Colo.) swam a tight race with Alex Larkin in the 200-breast, and took second-place after Larkin out touched him by merely nine tenths of a second.
The diving teams also had a great showing. Freshman Aaron Feight (Littleton, Colo.) took first-place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter with scores of 337.35 and 359.00, while Holly Watson (Sugar Land, Texas) took third-place in the 3-meter and Hannah Duckett (Magnolia, Texas) claimed third-place in the 1-meter.
The team will next be in action Nov., 12 when it meets Colorado School of Mines, Metro State and Colorado College in a tri-meet.
