DENVER - Sophomore Peter Mannino (Farmington Hills, Mich.) stopped 30 shots and Ryan Dingle (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) added two power-play goals as the No. 15 Denver Pioneers skated to a 5-1 win and series sweep over No. 2 Colorado College tonight at Magness Arena. The Pioneers tallied four power-play goals and a shorthanded tally in their fifth consecutive win over their in-state rivals. DU improves to 8-6-2 and 5-3-2 in the WCHA, while the Tigers fall to 12-5-1, 6-3-1. The Pioneers retained possession of the Gold Pan for the third consecutive year with the sweep of Colorado College.
"Goaltending is a big part of our program and we had some great goaltending this weekend," head coach George Gwozdecky said. "Our win last night put a lot of wind in our sails and it showed tonight. You can really see us improving as the season goes on."
Chris Butler (St. Louis, Mo.), Gabe Gauthier (Buena Park, Calif.) and J.D. Corbin (Littleton, Colo.) added goals and Matt Carle (Anchorage, Alaska) finished with three assists. Carle tallied seven assists in the two-game sweep. Paul Stastny (St. Louis, Mo.) added two assists for the second consecutive game. Butler tallied DU's first goal and Dingle's power-play goal 59 seconds into the second period proved to be the game-winner. After a Gauthier power-play goal at 6:30 of the third period, Corbin tallied his first goal in 50 games when he buried a shorthanded breakaway at 11:42. Dingle put the game out of reach with a power-play goal at 16:18. The two-goal game was the fourth for Dingle this season. He leads the Pioneers with 13 goals.
Brian Salcido scored CC's lone goal with less than one second remaining in the second period. CC outshot DU, 31-26, but allowed a 4-for-6 effort by DU on the power play. CC went 1-for-6 with the man-advantage. Drew O'Connell stopped 21 shots in the loss and fell to 2-1.
Mannino improved to 5-0 against Colorado College with his second consecutive strong outing. Mannino (5-3) has allowed one goal in his last two games. Butler added two assists for his first career three-point game. Gauthier chipped in two assists for his third three-point game of the season.
The Pioneers host Alaska Anchorage in a two game series on Dec. 9-10. Puck drop for game one is scheduled for 7:37 p.m. MT.
