Utah State Upsets No. 11 Denver Gymnastics

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State posted season-high scores on three events and snapped an eight-meet Denver winning streak Friday night as the Aggies upset the 11th-ranked University of Denver gymnastics team 194.925 - 194.875 at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The Pioneers suffered their second consecutive loss to fall to 7-4 on the season. Utah State improves to 1-4.

Three Denver gymnasts won event titles Friday night, as sophomore Heather Huffaker (DeSoto, Texas) won her second vault title of the season with a 9.85 and freshman Courtney Butler (Naperville, Ill.) was victorious on uneven bars for the second time with a 9.8. Freshman Sasha Sullivan (Glen Allen, Va.) won her second balance beam title of the season with a meet-high 9.85, her second beam title this season.

Denver, ranked No. 4 in the nation on vault entering the meet, posted just below its season average with a 48.975 team score. Sophomore Heather Huffaker (DeSoto, Texas) snapped a three-meet winless streak on the event as she tied for first with a 9.85, her first vault title since a 9.95 at Southern Utah on Jan. 18. Senior Stephanie Lorber (San Carlos, Calif.) posted her second-best score of the season and finished tied with teammate Casey Dobyns (Woodinville, Wash.) for third with scores of 9.8.

The Pioneers posted their best score of the season on uneven bars, as four Denver gymnasts finished among the top six in the meet to give the Pioneers a team score of 48.675. Freshman Courtney Butler (Naperville, Ill.) led the Pioneer parade with a 9.8, giving her a second career title on the event. Lorber tied her season-high with a 9.75 to finish tied for third and sophomore Katie Andrews (Crawfordsville, Ind.) and Sullivan both finished tied for fifth at 9.725.

The Pioneers scored a 48.900 on floor exercise and a 48.325 on balance beam but Utah State overcame a 97.650 - 97.425 deficit entering the third rotation for the win.

The Pioneers are next in action next Saturday, Feb. 19 when they host Minnesota at 6 p.m. in Hamilton Gymnasium.
